A few different approaches to making onion batter are given here including a baked batter version for those occasions where you re trying to reduce the level of fat in your food.

Coat a small batch of onion rings in batter.
Dip onion rings in batter and fry in deep fryer or skillet filled with a couple of inches of oil until golden brown on both sides.

Carefully lower into the hot oil and deep fry until crisp and golden about 2 3 minutes.
Dredge onion rings into flour and set on cookie rack now add buttermilk to flour and 2 tablespoon of instant potatos.
Combine milk and egg in a medium bowl and add dry ingredients and melted shortening.
Remove and drain on paper towels.
Fry the battered onion rings working in batches until browned about 5 minutes.
In a deep fat fryer heat 1 in.
Onion ring batter can be made plain or seasoned depending on your own preferences or the meal style.

In batches fry onion rings until golden brown 1 to 1 1 2 minutes on each side.
When one side is golden turn to the other side.
Repeat with the remaining onion and batter.
Dip rings into batter.
Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a piece of kitchen towel to drain.
Fry turning once until golden and crispy about 1 3 minutes per batch.
It really depends on the heat of the oil h0w wet the batter is and how thick the onions are sliced.
Remove the onions with a slotted spoon and transfer them.
Combine flour sugar and salt.
Add dry ingredients and mix until smooth.
Separate onion slices into rings.
Allow the onions to cook in the oil flipping them once to guarantee even browning for a total of about 3 minutes.
Continue with more batches until done.
In a shallow bowl whisk the first five ingredients.
Drain on paper towels.
Be careful not to overcrowd the pot.
Makes enough batter to quarter fill a bowl.
Let mixture sit for 10 mins the potatos will thicken batter.
